It's really very simple

Erik asks J2EE security - am I missing something? Depending on how you are implementing your pages, I can think of a couple (hackish?) ways. However, I'm writing on a dying laptop, so I'll have to post more tomorrow. ( Jan 09 2003, 10:24:07 PM ) Technology Permalink [Link]

Ooo, I like this idea

Russell does it again

I was thinking about including comments in my RSS feed and searches. That way anyone commenting here becomes One with my Blog.

Let's add this to Roller's Feature List as well! ( Jan 09 2003, 10:10:29 PM ) Roller Permalink [Link]

Sorry for the disruption

Out of sympathy for Niel I've reset my Java.Blogs settings, which has caused several older posts to reappear. Sorry folks. Actually I think this may be fixed by a recent checkin to Roller that I made (there, I tied this post to Roller so it'll show up on java.blogs in accordance with Niel's preferences). Beef-up Roller's RSS Support?

Don't get me wrong, I think Dave did a great job crafting a rss.vm (Velocity template) for generating the RSS feed. But I think it only supports one version (RSS 2.0?). Perhaps Jason Bell's new toy, RSSLIBJ, could help us respond with whatever format was requested (can the requester specify which version of RSS they want?). There is a cure?

I have absolutely no reason why people read my weblog. Perhaps they need ritalin?

More Free Roller goodness

Kalixia is now offering free Roller hosting. But the owner is going to be moving soon, and the server won't be available for 2-3 weeks ... well, it'd be nice if someone could take some of the load off of Anthony's FreeRoller. Anthony, have you considered cleaning out some of the deadwood? There must be a number of sites that have gone stale (more than 2 months old) or have languished with the standard "this is your first post" post. ( Jan 08 2003, 02:05:32 PM ) Roller Permalink

Roller supports Chinese? Supporting non-Western character-sets always seems near impossible (well, a lot of work), so imagine my surprise to find a FreeRoller site in chinese (okay, I'm guessing by some of the links, I wouldn't know chinese if it bit my ass). More Havoc

Jeff calls a spade a spade, quite rightly so. However, I think Fred (and I do not know him personally or even virtually) has dropped the idea of getting money upfront from potential customers. He is now talking about getting an investor (read a recent post to see more). And (again, my perception) I think Fred is targetting non-technical people who wouldn't know MT from the sharp end of a stick as his customers.

But Jeff is quite right to point out "hey, we don't know this guy's qualifications!" and to raise QoS issues and such:

What does $50 per year buy? What does $100 buy? What are service terms? Can I post anything on the server? How are you going to protect the data? What happens if a member abuses your service posting porn or illegal content? What will you be doing to make sure that this doesn't affect other users? What support you will giving to the Roller community?

I'll support Fred for two reasons:
* Out of self-interest: some of that money may come my way for developing Roller, and anything that raises the profile of Roller is likely to float my boat - with job prospects, writing opportunities, what have you.
* And because I think a "competing" service will take some of the load off of FreeRoller. Anthony is doing a great thing and I'm certain he is not breaking even with FreeRoller donations: anything that reduces his load helps.

Like Jeff I want people to support FreeRoller, whether Fred's plan takes off or not. ( Jan 01 2003, 12:21:30 PM ) Roller Permalink
