Create Your Own Yardsign Most of these are distinctly political, but a couple aren't necessarily partisan.

Watch For Bikes My best friend was in a car-bike accident on the way home from work today.

Going downhill at 25 mph someone turned Right directly in front of him, he was unable to stop before ramming into the rear window. He chipped 4 front teeth and pushed his top incisors back. His bike is trashed, his glasses are broke, and he's bruised and sore, but reports he is "okay".

The people in the car were good enough to stop and called the police. A report was filed; hopefully their insurance will pay his medical bills.

I've been biking to work a couple times a week since early May, and I'm a little scared to ride tomorrow.

Update: Of course I did ride in and everything was fine, Bill would have mocked me if I didn't ride, anyway. ( Jul 14 2008, 09:44:38 PM ) Personal Permalink

Senate blocks debate of clean energy tax credits Risking the wrath of Reuters:

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday blocked debate of a bill to offer about $17.7 billion in tax incentives for consumers to build renewable energy sources like windmills and solar arrays, and buy plug-in cars that run on electricity rather than gasoline. source

That just sucks, and I wonder what their justification is. It does involve a lot of money, including $7 billion over 10 years to extend renewable energy credits. But couldn't we offset that by reducing the subsidies we pay the oil companies? I mean, it's rather obvious they no longer need the taxpayer's help and they produce record profits quarter-after-quarter.

Politics: Obama's Father's Day Speech I love that Obama is willing to say these things to a black audience. But it applies to all of us, black or white, father or mother. ( Jun 16 2008, 09:30:09 AM ) Politics Permalink

Pardon the mess and random updates. I went into the database last night and did a major purge of spam comments as I believe they were the reason for Roller's instability on Brainopolis: there were nearly 600,000 comments, 99.999% of which I'm sure were spam. In the process all my old posts got their "publish time" automatically set to the current time by mysql! Unfortunately the Edit Weblog interface doesn't let me type in the pub time directly, I've got to use a nifty popup calendar and I'm getting carpal tunnel resetting the entries. The rest of the entries will have to wait until I get direct access to the db again (tonight) or I get direct access to the jsp code and I can make the date field directly editable (enabled=true?) (tonight). ( Mar 14 2008, 08:15:47 AM ) Technology Permalink

MyMiniCity Matt Webb introduced me to MyMiniCity. I really don't know anything about it yet, except that when you visit St. Lance the population will grow.
2/21/08: once you reach 50 population you get to the industry stage.
3/24/08: More Hits?
3/26: iframing the myminicity client.swf did not generate a boatload of hits.

Switches and Flags and Versions, oh my!

Well, A List Apart has definately set themselves apart this week. I cannot begin to describe how surprised and disgusted I am by this, so I'm glad Shelley says it much better than I ever could:

I was astonished to read the A List Apart article Beyond DOCTYPE: Web Standards, Forward Compatibility, and IE8 and even more astonished to read compliance with the message from Eric Meyer, Molly Holzschlag, and the WaSP organization.[BurningBird]
