I know nothing about Velocity, so doubt I'll be much help. But I have been using Eclipse's debugging feature of late, and it works pretty well, especially for NPEs. Have you tried it? Can you try it? I don't know that you could set a breakpoint, but maybe.

First step would be learning how to run Resin through Eclipse... Outside of that, I'll welcome any suggestions on how to set a breakpoint in the proper place.
