The image thing is a little curious - the HTML copy of the article gets a element added that should ensure that relative links gets properly resolved.
You'll be glad to know that the upcoming v0.4 of nntp//rss will have a new HTTP client subsystem within it, replacing the existing HttpUrlConnection based solution. This should once and for all resolve any polling issues that you may have experienced.
