I think it's quite easy to embrace both the non-designer and the designer.
Switch the blog fully over to pure-CSS. Div'vy up the site and make 'themes' be mere css sheets. Provide a way for people to edit their css, or just link to a css sheet that is maintained outside of Roller [an important power-user option].
And dump the velocity-included style-sheet bit and have a dynamic css link if the user is customising their CSS. Being inline in the page can cause issues I think.
That's still not enough, but is a huge leap. The next step would be for a designer to be able to easily add new pages with the same header/footer. I need to play more with velocity to understand how easy this is for them.
The next version does exactly what your 3rd paragraph suggests: dump the inline CSS. They've been moved out to external files linked-in via the standard mechanism.
I've given great thought on how to do header/footer includes in a simple manner. Dave implemented one style if you look at the "rolling" theme. I'd like to come up with a way to say "just use this 'style' and shove in the following content". It may be that I'm just not clever enough with Velocity myself.
